A co-worker of mine that watches the show even though he claims he doesn't like it anymore (but will definitely watch on Sunday) has a theory about the finale that I think is valid enough to post here.

Chase & Co. has gone a long way to make Abraham Lincoln references in the past two half-seasons: Tony watching the documentary about Lincoln's depression, AJ and the 'Lincoln logs'/TV commercial, etc. Now that a mob war has exploded Tony is like Lincoln, the leader of one side of an armed conflict between a brotherhood (LCN) fighting amongst themselves. My co-worker speculates that somehow the war between NY and NJ will be won by NJ (either by killing Phil or the other families intervening and taking out Phil) and that Tony, relaxing after the tough times, will attend Meadow's engagement to Patrick Parisi (or some public event in which the Soprano family will be in attendance) and then be shot in the back of the head while at his most casual and relaxed by AJ. That's right, a John Wilkes Booth-type assasination on the winning side of the civil war on our Lincoln figure. As Tony is dying he look around, sees its his son that has shot him and, right before dying, he flashes a big grin of pride and joy that his son finally showed some balls and accomplished something in life. The end.

Except for AJ being the shooter I see this 'John Wilkes Booth' scenario happening to Tony as a very poetic and reasonable way to end the series. The question is, who amongst the "Sopranos" characters would more like to pull the trigger on Tony's head while everyone is watching (a public execution)? I will personally kick the ass of the first poster that brings up Furio or the Russian...

Let's talk final episode predictions.........
The Godfather theory

Received this in an email from a friend. IMHO this seems very plausible for the finale.
Everybody's got a theory. Some people think Janice is going to kill Tony, but I can't agree with this. I think Janice and Tony's brother-sister bond goes deep, and I believe they truly like each other. You don't kill someone you've sung karaoke with. This ending would not make sense to me.

Others are saying Tony will kill himself, but I don't see that happening either.

Tony might actually pull his resources together and prevail over the Leotardo gang. But a surprise "happy ending" would not mesh with this season's ominous forebodings, and it would also fail to provide any real sense of closure. Phil Leotardo only recently emerged as Tony's key nemesis, and it's hardly satisfying to end a show's entire run with a surprise victory against an enemy who wasn't even around during the show's formative years. This ending is not good enough. We have to dig deeper for something that would make sense.

A friend of mine made an observation that's been haunting me. The show's finale might finally give the series title a double meaning if Tony Soprano decides to sing. I think this will happen. He's already been getting chummy with a federal investigator, and he's got few options left. After much thought, I'm going with this theory: I predict that Tony Soprano will attempt to save himself and his family by turning government witness in the final episode.

But he won't get off that easy. David Chase will have made the decision as to the final disposition of his beloved characters according to his own ideals about what the modern mafia lifestyle means, and the Sopranos basic moral outlook is very much in line with that of the two previous masterpieces of this genre, Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather movies and Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas/Casino twofer. Chase certainly has earned the right to stand next to Coppola and Scorsese, and it's not for nothing that he's been dropping references to The Godfather more than ever lately.

This season's opener delivered a big hint when we saw Tony puttering around in his tomato garden (a sure nod to Marlon Brando's great death scene in One). Let's face facts -- before this season, Tony didn't even have a tomato garden. You better believe this means something. You don't open a season with a Godfather reference unless you're going to close it with a Godfather reference, and since the season began with a nod to One I am guessing the season (and the series) will end with a sad reference to Three. Which means that, at some point in his flight to federal protection, Tony is going to watch in horror as poor Meadow gets gunned down. (Maybe even on the steps of an opera house)

That's my prediction. Tony will survive, but without his honor or his family intact.
Whadda ya think about dat?

Heh! Great use of the verb "to sing". For a minute there I thought you meant that he would be singing some opera and I was going to advise you that his voice register was too low. Hahaha!

As far as hints concerning props like the tomatoes, oranges and eggs, it's amazing how many references there are in the series to oranges and eggs. Someone posted some info for me with a link to an explanation of these things and then the next few shows I re-watched seemed to be chock full of these kinds of props.

I wish there was an easy way we could scan all the episodes at once looking for occurrences of oranges or eggs or some other prop. I'm telling you! The show is just full of these props. I keep forgetting when and where they crop up. But they are just all over the place. In Christopher's acting class (that Adrianna gave him for a present), one actor buys a bag of oranges and then Christopher tells him, "Hey! You are dropping your oranges." In that episode, there were several other references to bags of oranges. Darn! It's pretty difficult to automate the search for props like that.

Eggs are another one. Adriana offers to make scrambled eggs for Chris. Then Ritchie offers the same thing to Tony. Then Ralphie does ditto. I forget now, but when I started this post, I seemed to have a few other occasions in mind as well.

hmmm...Tony has always had a vegitable garden I think... When Richie Aperial gave Tony the leather jacket in season 2, Junior was there getting something out of the garden..."last of the fresh.." something or other.. There has been other episodes when he mentioned it.

Tony does have a garden. In Ep 1, Season 4, I believe, Carmela is coming out to harvest something and catches Tony at the tail end of hiding money in the bird feeder. And, as mkatona mentioned, he was harvesting something out of it in Full Leather Jacket during season 2. I don't think it's a big garden, probably just a few vegetables and spices.
Tony, his spirits crushed after b-lining to the fridge first thing in the morning: "Who ate the last piece of cake?"

"I can already hear the shattered glass as TV's across the country are thrown out the window in sheer disgust if your scenario took place. This will be followed by the angry screams of a millions-long march of peasants with lit torches marching toward HBO headquarters in midtown Manhattan to burn the place down. Then again Chase worked for NBC's St. Elsewhere, which gave us the infamous 'it was all in the mind of an autistic child' ending".

Chase has used dreams from the 1st season on to attempt to understand Tony better. He also uses it for forshadowing events. And, he loves continually f***ing our minds.

Well ... Live and Learn!

Say, wouldn't that have made a good title for one of the episodes?

Hello All.

Well seems like our favorite series will be over soon, or maybe not...who knows. Great site too, sorry didn't register sooner, but better late than never.

It seems like everybody got their ideas about last episode. I personally don't know about the whole episode but would like to share my ideas about the very last scene of the final episode and the whole series. i think it will be either one of these:

1. Tony gets killed and lies on his back looking at the sky and sees the ducks fly over...

2. It will be one of those ending scenes just like in every season when it shows how life is good at The Sopranos and how it sucks for people that got affected directly or not by them. But this time it will be exactly opposite, showing all the pain and suffering the Soprano family had long time coming and finally is going thru...well everything comes to an End.

3. Tony and his family relocating to the Elvis land(with no money) for some reason(Tony finally realises what a scum he is, getting that long anticipated psychological breakthru and ratting out, or just to save his life he's got nowhere to go but the feds and lovely agent harris is always there to "help" maybe?). Well the final scene will resemble the ending of Goodfellas, when Tony comes out of one of those portable homes in the trailer park to get the paper and looks into the camera. He is regular nobody now, Kevin Finnerty - the patio furniture salesman. Da End:)

P.S. I also wondering do you think as the series dies, will this forum die?
