The Hesh Scene

1
Can anyone explain the significance of that strange "fade to black" cut after Hesh's daughter says, "Israel is the Holy Land" and Hesh says, "Just you wait". They usually just cut directly from one scene to the next. Maybe it means nothing but it's more fun to think that there's something incredibly deep there.

Editing snafu. Just a terrible editing job.

Hesh's "Just you wait" , means he's not a believer. Like a lot of people who claim to be a christian or jew or whatever religion, a lot of people don't believe the invisible man in the sky story deep down. Hesh is one of those.

"Just you wait" is the same as saying "No way" or "Yeah, right" , etc...Hesh is an athiest like a lot of people are but won't fess up to it.

I don't think it was a mistake. Chase does this a lot, most famously with Carmella in the middle of Season 5, after she bumps into Wegler accidentally and she tells him that she's getting back together with Tony.

There is a certain reason for all of it, but I don't know what just yet.

Hesh's comment was not in response to the "Holy Land" statement, it was in response to the talk about Christian Fundamentalists.

Hesh is skeptical about the Christian Fundamentalists, within the American Government, being supportive of the Jewish people. It wasn't a comment that had anything to do with Hesh's belief in God.

I agree it had nothing to do with Hesh's belief in god. I took it as skepticism about some christian fundamentalists' support of the Israelis against Palestinians.

Some Christian evangelists are heavy supporters of Israel because they believe that Christ can't return to earth until the Jews return to Palestine (and then there will be Armageddon - then christ will come to judge us - at which time all nonbelievers (jews) will go to hell

lovely set up. support israelis so the wheel can be put in motion to send them to hell.

basically, hesh is calling out the fundamentalists on what many see as their bogus alliance with Israel

BTW, the rapper DaLux's CD is called 'Armageddon.'

I'm not quite sure about that fade-to-black, though of course it's not an editing mistake. I think it made Hesh's simple statement "You wait" all the more ominous. Perhaps, rather than a quick cut, by using a fadeout, the director wants the audience to linger on what was just said.

Maybe it's a way for us to remember that those who profess to be friends are waiting to turn on you when the moment comes. And 'The Sopranos' is full of people like that.

My take on the scene has already been posted by another commenter, but I'll surmise:

Hesh's comments don't have anything to do with the show, but are his opinions about the current events going on in the middle east. His "You wait" is a suspicious feeling towards christian fundamentalists, who need the jews to return to palestine in order to trigger armageddon, which will call for the return of their messiah.

It's like a comment designed to get the user to wake up, and with the ominous edit to the next scene, sort of akin to providing a nugget of information for the viewer to consider. This is akin to when, in season 5, there was a discussion regarding nuclear bombs slipping through cargo containers, and Paulie grumbled how Bush was giving no-bid contracts to his friends, that action being something the mob would do too. It was blatant, I thought, but hey anything in the struggle is fine <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/tongue.gif ALT=":p"> .

But this still doesn't make up for that wierd as hell Wigler Carmella edit. What was that all about in retrospect? Maybe Carmella will be killed, and then that scene would make sense...(hey...)

Anyways, although it was an ominous comment, due to my and others general unease when it comes to the future and the middle east, it played along with the themes of the show, where it involved selfishness and hidden agendas.

Chase likes to infuse a little antiBushism and antiGOPism from time to time...like it or not. Hesh's dig was in response to what some believe to be the attempted (and moderately successful) co-opting of American Jews by the evangelical wing GOP under the guise of a shared support of Israel. Some suggest that this is just a thinly veiled shoplifting and manipulation of American Jewry who, traditionally have been monolithically Democrat. Beth's position represented the naively gullible; her father's the skeptical.

There were a couple of other political digs in this epi: Katie Couric's background reportage of dipping Bush approval. Also, the personna of the evangelical preacher was a fairly unattractive depiction of the anti-intellectual stereotype of Christian right.

A little further:

Many Jews (not all by any means) feel that Christians were responsible for the holocaust. I once saw an elderly journalist who was in Lithuania when the Nazis invaded. He remembered watching Christians sieze Jews and run them through a slaughterhouse as if they were animals. While they were killing them they were singing hymns.

I suspect that Hesch is alluding to the idea that these people (meaning fundamentalists) are not interested in helping Israel because they care about Jews as human beings, but because of all kinds of selfish motivations. When times change they would turn on them again in the most brutal fashion because no one is as brutal as a man who thinks God approves of his cruelty (like Islamic fundamentalists, for example).
