I agree that this storyline needs to go. It has had moments of real poignancy, and had one in this episode with Vito on the phone with his son, but the guy needs to get killed ASAP. This coming from a guy who emphatically does NOT watch this show for the whackings.

I actually thought the James Hetfield-looking gentleman and his friends were baiting Vito for the purpose of committing a hate crime, which would just bring the cliches in this story to an intolerable level.

Well, for the record, we must not forget, that this is HBO, not only pushing the envelope, but it sometimes creates some for others to do it.

What I mean, is that it is the same channel which gave us SIX FEET UNDER with kissing man and gay relationships.

Whenever we look at a character in the SOPRANOS, (me for one) a list pops down in front of my eyes:
This is what I have with Vito

He whacked Jackie Aprile Jr.
He played basketball with Ralphie
He blew a security guard
Lied about it.

I think in his case the current events-this sudden new flame is really comes from the abrupt change in life. As you leave one place behind all new experiences will have a bigger meaning.

The only thng is that makes me worried is that only two episodes are left...

If he had just disgraced his wife/kids and was hooking up soulfully with some hot 40-something female, I'd still take exception to all the syrupy b.s. All that was missing was Bolero playing in the background. If I hear Ravel next ep., I'm gonna throw something at the TV!

I agree with you and others that the Vito-Gay line is becoming (or has become) tiresome. I wonder if Chase decided to 'milk' it a little more because of the almost-contemporaneous popularity of "Brokeback." I never considered Vito one of the major sideline characters even before and immediately afterward of the Finn episodes.

Re Ravel: Was the Bolero heard in any SOPS episode? Or "Brokeback"? I can't recall. It is and has been such an extremely popular piece of ("classical") music, and so frequently used in ALL avenues of filmed drama that I probably just don't notice it when it is there. If you're referring to it as "syrupy", I disagree. Dramatic, exotic, enervatingy rhythmical come to mind. But then, our "sweets" tastes are probably quite polar.

I think just a tiny but well-chosen excerpt from Ravel's Daphnis & Chloe would be an excellent musical backdrop to suggest the enveloping emotions of Tony and Carm when they experience their ultimate 'rediscovered' marital bliss.

Rather than throw something at the TV, I’d turn it up!

I thought there were only 8 more coming up in Jan.

And I agree that the Vito storyline is taking too long. I see somewhat where it is going, but it could have been told in less time, thus saving screen time for characters that have been almost absent (Junior, Janice and Melfi for the most part) or underexplained so far (Charmaine, Carm and her dad, Chris, Paulie...)

Re: Episodes left

OK, we've gone terribly off topic, but to clear up any confusion, this is the last thing the HBO Sopranos site has said about the number of episodes:

08.23.2005 | Sopranos announces bonus episodes

HBO announced that in addition to THE SOPRANOS' upcoming sixth season, which will include 12 episodes, HBO will produce an additional eight bonus episodes, to debut in January 2007.

So, we have four more left in this portion of the season, and then an additional 8 starting in January.

Now back to your regularly scheduled Vito love...or non love, as the case may be.

Never used in the Sopranos.

Not trying to speak for SofiaG, but I'm thinking she was alluding to the movie "10" with Dudley Moore? I never watched it but am aware of a famous scene from it where Bo Derek is jogging in slo mo on the beach and Bolero plays in the background. I think her beef is more with that movie than with Ravel.

If not, JZ, we will have to gang up on her and force her to listen to Argerich's (or Collins') versions of "Gaspard de la Nuit".

Through my lens the Vito arc is appropriate, athough I realize in reading the outrage and protest expressed in some of the earthier message boards that I am in the minority. I enjoy the literary tidiness (or, maybe balance) of how Vito's task reinforces Tony's overall mission. Spoork (from the old neighborhood) aptly draws a parallel between Tony's growing ambivalence and emergence for authenticity with Vito's "Live Free or Die" quest. This is not to say that I am a Vito fan at all. He was not a particularly honorable wiseguy, nor a righteous faygala. However, I do like the fact that Chase is willing to explore the one out of ten ratio within the mob as it has been examined within the military, professional sports, correctional facilities, etc. I had heard that DC was going to be especially fearless this season. Maybe testing the Soprano viewer's capacity to sit with the notion of a gay wiseguy is part of his envelope-pushing.
