Not since Lisa Birnbach's parody of a particular niche of American society in <span style="text-decoration:underline">The Preppy Handbook</span>, has a cultural stereotype (the New England village) been so amusingly characterized:

Dart-Ford: Loved the hybridization of both Dartmouth and Concord

Archetypal dry-witted New England innkeepeer: replete with charming inn, four-poster bed, etc.

Quaint locals: the (Happy Wanderer) walking stick guy, fly fisherman, waterfall serenity...I mean, could it be anymore idyllic?

And then there is the Mamet-laden undertone of a homoerotic utopia:

"Dart" as phallic symbol

The diner where everyone knows your name and presumably exists in non-heterosexist bliss.

New best friends, who just happen to to be gay antiquaires

There just seemed to be such a wonderful abundance of archetypal and symbolically ambiguous themes in this village setting (providing a backdrop for Vito that parallels Tony's Kevin Finnerty experience), that I feel the temerity to propose this as a "stand alone" thread...

Dartford IS a great setup. You're right -- It's like Vito's own Finnerty dream. Pretty sure it's going to turn into a nightmare. Or, to use the Red Riding Hood symbolism, this fairy tale will get ugly. It's all too good to be true.

I noted in the Ep thread that the innkeeper's name was Betty Wolf. I wonder if/how she will turn on Vito. Of course, Little Red Riding Hood survives the wolf, while the wolf is killed, but naturally there won't be direct parallels with that fairy tale.

When Vito entered into the Dartford antique store, he left the beautiful, radiant setting to come inside. The weather outside was gorgeous. The license plate he looked at was also outside (there was a brief shadow that passed inbetween the store window and the plate itself, so you were able to tell).

Oddly however, the store itself was a striking contrast to beautiful Dartford. It was dreary, shadow-y, and definitely a contrast from the happy activities outside. Hmm.

It was no coincidence that this scene was very last one of the episode. Are fireworks about to begin?? The fade-out song kept repeating "4th of July..."

not too sure what would be considered a typical country antique store. i have been in a typical store. i have been in a country store. i have been in an antique store.

i can tell you one thing, those stores all had their lights on, unlike the one in Dart-ford.

those new englanders are notoriously thrifty.. parsimonious, frugal... you know... cheap.. it was a nice morning and plenty of sunlight was coming in the full glass front windows.. that's my unofficial guess.. just saying that many antique stores have a kind of 'dingy' feel to them, so it didnt bother me.
