Real Dream or Flash Forward?

1
Many situations in this first episode hint at another possible dream sequence. More than just the Carmella/adrianna scene which might be a dream within a dream. I could definately be wrong as this would probably be a big let down for fans of the show. But watch it again keeping what I said in mind- most of the dialogue does not fit the personalities of the characters. Is this a real dream to last seasons 'test dream'?? Members only would know.

I don't think it's a flash forward either to much is still intact for this to be the end. Paulie, Chris, Sil, Phil, Johnny, Patsy, Litle Paulie, Benny, Vito. Everyone is still alive and I doubt that they will all make it to the last episode. Interesting theory though. I think it just happened, Tony will be inactive for a bit and it will humble him and force him to make a choice about life and where it's headed.

Evidence AGAINST a backward season
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Much has been made about season six being a "backward" season. People refer to the beginning of season six as the curtain call for tony soprano, and the rest of the season playing backwards. Evidence for this is referred to as pointing out in the second episode that Tony will be going to the West Coast, but since he has just been shot people are wondering how this is so. More evidence could be suggested by this promotional poster:

This could suggest a backward season. However, I would like to throw out evidence that this is not the case, and was wondering if others could throw up their's as well (such as Janice and her baby):

The synopsis for the second episode states that Christopher discusses terrorism with the FBI. We know in the first episode they didn't find out that Agent Harris got converted to terrorism, and they asked him what he wanted (some satriale sandwich). In the trailer clip, we have dialogue by Christopher stating that "I think that's why you come her so much. Not for food, but I think you miss us." or words to that effect. Why would they explain to the agent why he was there if they had been there before, or "so much" as Christopher said? I think this is one for the forward-time sequence for the season.

EDIT: Good post, but you said "The syponosis for the second SEASON" that was edited in order to not confuse anyone else.

Yep, the fact that Christopher will discuss Terrorism with Agent Harris in the next episode proves that it won't be a backwards season.

Also, Johnny Sack's daughter apparently just had her wedding shower, and has yet to actually be married. An episode later this year will take place at her wedding.

Yeah I am really hoping against the backwards season and while I think there will certainly be some flashbacks / dream sequences that go back to the "space between" the actual season will be in the forward direction. Keep in mind that if we in fact saw the last episode first there really couldn't be many surprises in store (we saw nearly all the main characters alive and well, no mention of anything that made us go "huh, I wonder how that happened" aside from maybe Baccala and Janice making the baby (no thanks on revisiting that topic). Though I was wondering about the feast of St. Joe the FBI asked Eugene about. We know that there is the Carnival / Feast in the previews and I am hoping that either that is a different feast or it is just a minor flashback to that one (maybe in court?). But I think that most signs indicate things are going to progress rather then regress (Junior being held up in jail or something to that effect when he says that line to Tony from behind the glass...).

Plus the photos of Allegra's shower indicate the wedding in the preview is in the future and not in the past.

there is NO chance it is a backwards season

when someone dials 911 and then doesn't say anything its standard procedure to send people to make sure nothing is wrong.

i always interpreted that scene as all tony needed to do was make the call

Also, if it is a backwards season (which I would bet my savings account that it is NOT) Tony mentions on numerous times how good of a year it has been. That certainly isn't a season I am interested in watching. There needs to be some conflict. If it were backwards, it would essentially mean no one of real consequence dies until the end/first episode. Sounds pretty boring to me. While I am certainly not a blood-hungry, mobster-craving viewer, we would typically receive a small amount of action every now and again to spice things up. If not, we are possibly looking at the most boring (as far as violence goes) season since the 4th. Finally, I doubt Chase would go that route for the crescendo of his masterpiece.

Is the lack of next week's previews a hint?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mere speculation, and only episode one spoilers ensue...

Is this season backwards? Did it begin with the season finale? First, Eugene is already a rat, perhaps we will discover why in flashback? Second, Tony teetering between life and death is the perfect cliffhanger for the wait between this season, and final 8 (or was it 7 episodes?), and finally there wasn't a "Next Week On the Sopranos" preview leading me to believe there isn't a following episode planned for this season, just previous ones. Any validity?

EDIT: Also did anyone notice no newspaper to start the season? The beginning and end of this episode are unlike every other season, hints or misleading for amusement?

Re: Is the lack of next week's previews a hint?

As for the lack of previews it is simply due to them wanting to captivate every viewer who tuned in for the opener and have the "is he dead" question without an answer all week.

As for the backwards theory, it's been discussed alot since the episode has aired and I think there is enough evidence to say that while there probably will be flashbacks / dream sequences the season will move forward rather then backward.

Those who say there is “evidence” against a backwards season are clearly wrong. None of the so called evidence clearly determines whether the season will go forward, backward, or will go backward a few episodes. My prediction is that next week’s episode will be backwards in time and that there will be a few episodes in the past to keep us hanging as to Tony’s fate.

As for the so called evidence:

#1 Janice’s baby. The baby appears pretty young, but that doesn’t say anything. The term of a baby is nine months and any of those nine months could be material for the next couple of episodes.

#2 Christopher discusses terrorism with the FBI: Maybe Chris talked to a different agent before Harris left for Pakistan about terrorism. Maybe Chris gave the FBI some info on someone that lead the FBI to go to Pakistan, like he knew of some Pakistanis acquiring bombs or guns and this lead was followed over a period of months back to Pakistan. for that matter it could be related to a domestic terrorist plot that had nothing to do with agent Harris going to Pakistan.

The reality is that nothing in this episode can prove or disprove that the season will
go back in time.

"Yep, the fact that Christopher will discuss Terrorism with Agent Harris in the next episode proves that it won't be a backwards season."

The fact is this proves nothing.

The other thing that I don’t understand is the argument that since Tony called 911 that he
will live. A 911 call in Elizabeth, or wherever Jun lives could take an hour to get to, not
to mention the drive to the hospital etc.

What are we discussing here??

9
I started this post with the intention of discuissing the SOMEWHAT odd dialogue and out of character behavior in parts of the "Members Only" episode. I did not suggest the season would run backwards, as I don't think it can or should. Though it could jump around ala Pulp Fiction or Resevoir Dogs. My question to everyone is...Is this entire episode presented in reality and not dreamscape.

Heres a short list of odd scenes: <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:">

The Carmella / Tony sushi date (Tony discussing business?)

The scene with Tony AJ and Meadow in the kitchen

The entire Tony shooting scene

Tony, Janice and the baby,Bobby and Junior in the kitchen

Possibly the Melfi scene with the pillow that was not earlier discussed

The funeral scene and Tony's abrupt exit

IF NOT A DREAM LETS HERE SOME THEORIES.
