Reoccuring Silvio Observations & Medicated Ramblings

1
I couldn't find a good place to put this.....however I remembered in the past a poster mentioning...(s)he got some ill vibes from Silvio as of late.....

I did as well at the beginning of the season....but I chalked it up to "hey Steve van Zandt just has that mobster-chic look".....however it's just been little things....like Silvio going against Tony in the past....and with this last episode....it was interesting how he played Tony, by stating that "people in the family are dissatisfied...and it's not just the young ones....but people who have been there since the beginning" (paraphrase). Silvio knew that first person Tony would go to is Paulie....and it's been so convenient that Paulie has laid low for the past maybe 4-5 episodes......so it gives the opinion that Paulie may be on some next type stuff. Plus, it does sound like Paulie's M.O. to gripe and moan behind closed doors and then when noone is listening....he'll make it public.

I think Silvio played on that....he either played on it, or is trying to put a bug (not a rat reference)....but kinda signal to Tony to be mindful of Paulie.

It almost broke my heart when Tony took that picture of himself in the general's uniform next to Pie-oh-My down....Paulie gave me an almost childlike feeling....like he just wanted Tony's approval....and like he was sad that Tony doesn't come around him anymore.....because they were friends. However, that comes back to something Carmela mentioned....and someone else eluded to (memory fails me)....."since you are the boss....those aren't your friends....they are your employees....they laugh loud and long at your jokes...regardless to how corny". However, I'm a little distrustful of him.....my history is a little rusty...but wasn't an emporer killed by his own advisor or someone in his council.

Tony was kinda sad after Silvio told him that veterans were unhappy, and I think he lashed out of frustration....but he realizes that it's lonely at the top....referenced in the Test Dream...that penthouse suite looking down on the commoners in Central Park. Same as he told to Silvio...that his desicion will affect people and their livlihoods....and he'll never understand that. However, as pissed off as Tony was.....I think that one comment will bite his ass.

I've just been getting the feeling that as of late....Silvio has been doing his job efficiently like he always has, and it will be that there is a point where Silvio will be like....."there is no more than I can advise you on....you took my advice when it was convenient to you". I felt that especially when Silvio was putting that money in the safe....and Tony came back from upstate...and Silvio dusted his hands off after putting the money in the safe....mabe Silvio is just meticulously clean or something...but I didn't see any dirt or dust. I kinda saw it as....."i'm doing my job....but i'm wiping my hands of you personally....as far as being concerned and giving a damn"

However....I am still going with my opinion that if the Soprano family has to fall....it will be with something so minor as that cigarette thing....or something with the casino....the homicides wouldn't be uncovered until later. Because I notice....you can kill umpteen people in front of a police station using a gun with no serial numbers.....and someway you can get off, but let you cheat Uncle Sam....and you'll be totally screwed with no lube.

its cool ya made a post about this, cause Ive been feeling the same way about silvio as well. Doesn't he just look more "villain-ish" as of late?

What stood out most for me is when Tony said "You have no idea what its like to be at the top....(blah blah blah)...its lonely at the top" and Silvio simply says "I'm sorry you feel that way."

It is said that your most trusted ally is your worst enemy.....(okay so I made that up, but it sounded good )

ok....see, i know i'm not crazy....it's just like Silvio's demeanor towards Tony has just changed. Maybe it's some "off-camera" situations that's not in the script. It's just like you can see the disgust.

After Tony came back from upstate and they were back in the office....Even the looks and demeanor of the people back there....it was like a feigned sympathy....but it's not genuine...like the sympathy you'd have if a long-time friend had to endure something painful. It's kinda like the sympathy you have...if a co-worker passes...or loses a relative. Yeah, there's sympathy...but unless you are close....it's not like you will be out-of-sorts.

Silvio touching his shoulder and looking at him....I think that was a sign of his efficiently performing his duties as consiglieri....how would it look if Sil gave Tony the "stink-eye"?It was like a "how unfortunate for you...but better you than me" type-look.

But i definately think that Silvio is looking more sinister this season.....it might be the toupee.

I too am glad someone else feels this way. I mentioned early in the season that Silvio looks at Tony like he's disgusted or annoyed. One of the less 'friendly' posters shot me down so I did not bring it up again. Silvio seems to be one of those people that you really never know what is going on inside their head or how they actually feel. Sometimes he seems to just be going through the motions, like when he met up with Christoper and took him the money. He did not seem to be happy to be there. But on the other hand, he handled the Adrianna situation like he may have enjoyed it to some degree. He was almost too consoling to her on the ride to the woods....I think that may have been what made her realize something wasn't right. It will be interesting to see what unfolds with Sil.

.....I have my mom watching the Sopranos...and that was what she noticed. First thing she said..."that's Little Stevie van Zandt"....i laughed. She said....well what's wrong with his toupee (rug) in the back, it looks a little unfurled.

I had to laugh about that....however, I agree with ZitiQueen. Silvio is one of the harder to read characters, simply because his face is almost comically stoic. However, it's just like compared to Sil and Tony's relationship in the past. As of late...*starting in Season 4 with the tile situation*....it's like his relationship with Tony is almost forced in nature. Like, it's just part of his job. I know he has genuine concern for Tony...because they have history, however it just seems like there's a change to me.

I saw that scene totally different. I saw it as the guys not really knowing what to say. After all, it's not like Tony just lost a cousin - Tony just KILLED HIS OWN COUSIN, all to protect the very men that were sitting in that room.

How do you react to that if you were one of those men? With smiles and high fives? No, you sit quietly and you say nothing.

Very tough scene, and any of the Silvio/Tony animosity that there was (and I admit that I did notice tension and eye rolling and the like), all went away at the end when Sil patted Tony's back. That was the defining moment in their relationship.

What's funny is that, though this season was darker and more morose than anything I've seen Chase do, he did solidify Tony's relationships with Sil and with Junior (both quietly, with Sil's pat and Junior's non response to Tony's question about love), which is key.

I think he IS fastidious. I think it was in the previous ep where we see him using spot remover on his lapel. And then, hey, just look at his hair. It reminds me of those molded plastic wigs (black, red, and blonde) that I used to have as a child.

But also (back to the hand-dusting), I think that was also a symbolic gesture. "Well, that's that!" Things have been taken care of. Time to move on.

I'm not sure what to make of him. I too for a while have noticed odd little looks from him. It kind of looked like he was contemptuous of Tony's decisions or of something Tony had just said. Yet he also seems very loyal. He bits his tongue until it's imperative that he speak up. He can and will be honest with Tony.

I think he'd be a better leader than Tony.
